Moscow Domodedovo International Airport is the largest and most promising airport in the Russian Federation. In 2007 the airport’s total passenger traffic amounted to 18.75 million people, which is a 22% increase as compared to the previous year. In January – August 2008, Domodedovo serviced 14.39 million passengers which is a 17.5% increase as compared to the same period of the previous year.
The share of Domodedovo Airport within the Moscow aviation node is 48%. According to ACI Europe, Domodedovo is one of the 20 largest European airports and the absolute leader in terms of the growth dynamics among second-tier airports (servicing 10 to 25 million passengers per annum).
At present, 80 airlines operate regular flights to Domodedovo and its route network covers about 225 destinations around the globe. In the past two years alone, such air carriers as Austrian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Royal Jordanian Airlines, JAL, Malev, Lufthansa and many others have chosen Domodedovo for their operations to Russia.
The strategic goal of Domodedovo Airport is to become one of the top five European airports offering the best service quality by 2010, and one of the five largest European airports – by 2020. The Moscow Region government has reserved 13,000 hectares of land to ensure further development of Domodedovo Airport. The airport’s strategic development plan includes a further infrastructure development, the construction of new terminals and runways.
